Welcome to GAO Toastmasters! (District 36, Club 5117)
GAO Toastmasters is a local chapter of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit organization that gives its members the opportunity to develop and improve their public speaking and leadership abilities through local club meetings, training seminars, and speech contests.
We meet via Zoom the first and third Thursdays of the month at 11:30 am (ET) - visitors are always welcome! Please reach out to the contact below for the Zoom link.
A typical meeting is emceed by the "Toastmaster of the Day," who organizes the meeting to ensure that critical meeting roles are filled. Every meeting includes prepared speeches as well as table topics, which are prompts that one of the meeting participants selects in advance to provide an opportunity for members and guests to practice their off-the-cuff speaking skills. Speech evaluators assess each prepared speech and give feedback.
The environment in a typical GAO Toastmasters meeting is friendly and collegial. Visitors and guests are free to attend as many meetings as they wish before participating and/or joining. However, putting one's speaking skills to the test in the Toastmasters environment can reap dividends. Members quickly become better communicators, and their self-confidence grows by leaps and bounds.
Contact the Vice President for Public Relations, Mollie Todd (toddmk@gao.gov) for information about attending a meeting or joining GAO Toastmasters.
